Evolution: The Ecological Reverberations of Toxic Trace Elements

چکیده
A recent study of plants that accumulate selenium from soils illustrates how plant defenses can be sequestered and presumably exploited defensively by herbivores that have co-evolved selenium resistance.

Apatite Application to Investigate Magmatic Evolution of Zouzan Granites, NE Lut Block
Apatite minerals of I-type Zouzan granitoids and typical garnet-bearing S-type granites have been analyzed by electron microprobe to define trace element concentrations and compare them in different granites. Zouzan granites are composed of apatites with lower Fe, Mn, Na and HREE and higher REE and ∑REE relative to S-type ones. Trace elements abundances of apatite often vary with some parameter...
متن کاملEcological aspects of plant selenium hyperaccumulation.
Hyperaccumulators are plants that accumulate toxic elements to extraordinary levels. Selenium (Se) hyperaccumulators can contain 0.1-1.5% of their dry weight as Se, levels toxic to most other organisms. In this review we summarise what is known about the ecological functions and implications of Se (hyper)accumulation by plants. Selenium promotes hyperaccumulator growth and also offers a plant s...
متن کاملSpatial distribution of trace elements and ecotoxicity of bottom sediments in Rybnik reservoir, Silesian-Poland
The aim of study was to integrate chemical analyses and toxicity bioassays in order to assess the environmental risk connected with the presence of trace elements in the sediments. This study examined the ecological significance of trace elements in bottom sediments by applying a set of complementary sediment quality assessment methods sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) (mean probable effect co...
متن کاملPotential ecological risk assessment of arsenic, cadmium, nickel and vanadium in the surface sediments of southern of Caspian Sea (case study: Khazar Abad, Sari Township)
Background and Objective: Soils and sediments contamination with trace and toxic elements lead to potential ecological risk and adverse effects on human health and so have been the cause of increasing concern worldwide. Therefore, this study was carried out to potential ecological risk assessment of As, Cd, Ni and V in surface sediments of Khazar Abad, southern parts of Caspian Sea in 2019. M...
متن کاملDistribution of trace elements in coal and coal fly ash and their recovery with mineral processing practices: A review
Today coal is among the most important energy sources. In order to meet the world's energy demands, low-calorie lignite with a high ash content is generally used in the large capacity coal-fired thermal power plants. As a result of coal firing, wastes such as fly ash, slag, and flue gas are also produced. Subsequently, toxic trace elements within coal are transferred to wastes such as slag, fl...
